There has been an observed issue where certain USB-C Mobile Devices are unable to successfully negotiate a Power Role Swap when fully charged (i.e. Battery is at 100%).

When fully charged the Mobile Device will briefly disconnect during the transition from Charge to Discharge instead of renegotiating a Power Role Swap. This results in all peripherals being dropped before attempting to reconnect. Upon reconnection the Charging Cycle is restarted and the renegotiation attempt repeats over and over again.

This is particularly problematic for a Device during recalibrating (i.e. setting the Tablet to 100% after every x cycles).

Sometimes, though not always, the Mobile Device will break out of this loop on its own, but the only way to break this cycle is either to discharge the Tablet below 100%, or prevent the Tablet from every reaching 100%.

If you find yourself experiencing this issue please connect LAVA Support in order to resolve this issue.

Solving the boot up and charging problems of a Samsung Tab 4 can be achieved
with the LAVA STS-** products.

A Samsung Tab 4 8" or 10.1" Tablet with Android KitKat, which is powered
off, cannot be charged or activated when a LAVA SimulCharge product is set
to SimulCharge mode. In this state the screen may flicker every few seconds.

SimulCharge mode is the desired operational state, as it permits a tablet
to charge and operate with USB accessories.

To address the problem, the LAVA STS-** SimulCharge products have the
Charge-Only mode, which permits the Tab 4 Tablet with KitKat to charge
as well as be powered on. A push button on the STS-** case is used to
change charging modes.

The Android Lollipop behavior differs from KitKat on the Tab 4. The tablet
will charge in SimulCharge mode and can be powerred on from SimulCharge mode.
The Lollipop problem is that once powered up, the tablet may not recognize
the STS-** adapter and the tablet may not be charging. Changing from
Charge-Only mode back to SimulCharge mode restores use of the STS-** adapter.

The Tab 4 7" device has not been tested.

The tablet can optionally remain in Charge-Only mode, to charge the tablet
battery at a higher rate. In Charge-Only mode, the tablet recognizes
no USB accessories. Once a tablet is active, changing back to SimulCharge
mode can be performed at any time. It is best to have some battery charge
built up before switching back to SimulCharge.

The Charge-Only mode can be used as a recovery mode for a Samsung Tab 4
tablet, which has been turned off or has completely discharged.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
The majority of LAVA SimulCharge products have a (Charge) Mode button which
toggles between the SimulCharge and Charge-Only mode. The power on default
is always SimulCharge.

When pressing the Mode Select button for at least 1/4 second then releasing
it, the Mode is toggled between SimulCharge Mode and Charge-Only Mode.
If the button is pressed for more than 4 seconds, the button is ignored
until released then pressed again.

The product status lights report which mode is active. A yellow indicator
reports SimulCharge mode is active. A green indicator reports Charge-Only
mode is active.

The STS-** products which have the Mode button include the STS-3U, STS-E,
STS-PE, STS-2UE, STS-P2UE, and the STS-P2UE+. These products are intended
for a specific set of Samsung Tablets.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
The STS (formerly TL002C) is a board only product for OEM applications.
This product is not provided with a (Charge) Mode button, but instead has
a Mode jumper. Shorting the Mode jumper is equivalent to pushing the
Mode button on the STS-** products. This product is intended for a
specific set of Samsung Tablets.

The STS Type jumper configures the Mode jumper for level sensitive or
edge sensitive operation. Please consult the product specific documentation
for further details on the STS Mode and Type jumper behavior. With the
Type jumper removed, the board operates the same as a STS-** product.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
The TL002 product is a user level product that provides SimulCharge support
and adapts the Tablet Micro USB-B receptacle to a USB-A receptacle. This
product does not support the Charge-Only mode. This product is intended
for a specific set of Samsung Tablets.

A Samsung Tab 4 with KitKat, which is turned off, can only be turned back
on if the TL-002 is unplugged from the tablet, or the power to the TL-002
is turned off. If the tablet battery has been completely discharged,
the tablet must be plugged directly into a Samsung Charger to build up
a minimum battery charge, before reconnecting the TL-002.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
The PL-002 physically resembles the TL-002, but is designed for a specific
set of Samsung Mobile Telephones. The PL-002 operates in the same manner
as the TL-002. The LAVA Web site contains a compatibility table to
identify which Samsung devices are supported.

Do not use a PL-002 with a Samsung Tablet. Using a PL-002 with a Samsung
Tablet will do no harm. However the desired charging modes will not work.

[FAQ] Using External Hard Drives with Samsung tablets

Interfacing an external hard drive to a Samsung tablet can be achieved
with the LAVA STS-** product family. The LAVA web site documents
which Samsung tablets are compatible with the STS-** product family.

The STS-** Product Family includes the STS-E, STS-PE, STS-3U,
STS-2UE, STS-P2UE, STS-P2UE+, STS board and TL002.

We do not test for specific drive compatibility, as there are simply too many
drives on the market. The problems most people seem to encounter with
external USB drives can be resolved with the following rules:

1) The drive must be formatted for FAT32 or exFAT
2) Power for the hard drive should be supplied by the Simulcharge
adapter rather than the tablet. Other OTG Adapters require
the tablet supply the hard drive power.
3) Make sure the USB Power Supply used for the Simulcharge Adapter
can supply enough current for the tablet and the hard drive.
4) Do not extend the standard cables.

The Android operating system supports the FAT32 and exFAT file systems.
Many of the external drives start out formatted for NTFS, which
is not natively supported by Android. A NTFS drive must be reformatted.

The FAT32 format is not efficient for large drives, when many small files
are required. FAT32 is fine when dealing mainly larger files. There is a
4 GB file size limit inherent in FAT32.

The exFAT file system allows file sizes larger than 4 GB.

Older computer operating systems such as XP may require updates to support
exFAT on an external drive. We have recently used an XP 32-bit system with
a 1 TB Western Digital "My Passport" Drive 1 TB drives formatted for exFAT.
The drive was initially setup for NTFS, and had to be reformatting.

The USB hard drives should work off a standard USB port, which means
5 volts and up to 500 mA. If the tablet cannot provide this voltage
and current, the drive will not work or behave erratically. Using
an Simulcharge adapter which is powered from a USB Charger/Supply
resolves this power issue.

A small tablet may only have been shipped with a 700 mA to 1000 mA
USB Charger/Supply. This will not have enough power to charge the
tablet and supply the drive. The larger tablets (10 inch and above)
typically have a 2000 mA (2 ampere) USB Charger/Supply.

The LAVA TL002 (and PL002) requires a USB Charger/Supply with a Dedicated
Charge Port (DCP). This is sometimes referred to as a high capacity charger.
The charger supply with the Samsung tablet is a suitable charger.
The TL002 (and PL002) operate as a simply OTG Adapter when no power
is provided.

All other LAVA SimulCharge products can be used with any USB Charger/Supply
or other 5 volt power source. The other permitted power sources include
External USB Battery Packs. In all cases the power source must have
sufficient power for the tablet and hard drive. The other Simulcharge
products require power to be present to operate.

A tablet controlling an external drive is operating as a USB Host.
The Samsung tablets used with the LAVA Simulcharge products draw less
than 1.4 amperes when operating in Simulcharge mode. A 2000 mA (2 ampere)
USB Charger/Supply should be enough to power the tablet and the hard drive.

Do not extend the power cable supplied with the tablet USB Charger/Supply.
Extending the cable results in additional voltage (power) loss along the cable.
An extended cable may result in the drive failing to work or the tablet
not charging. If the voltage at the drive is too low, the drive data could
be corrupted.

We have tested a few hard drives in the 350 GB to 1 TB range. We have
read about people having success with larger drives. We cannot guarantee
any one drive and tablet combination as we do not have access to the
many drives on the market. Following the earlier rules should yield
success in most cases.

not charging.

I've disabled WiFi and Celluar Data, enabled the Wired Connection, but I'm still can't get any communication through the Ethernet.

I was originally running DHCP, but opted for a Static IP Address, without change.
Any ideas?

When using a TL-002 to connect a Western Digital My Passport 2TB usb drive, or a Seagate Freeagent Goflex 3TB usb drive to a Samsung
Galaxy 10.5 S tablet, the tablet- after noting a 'usb mass storage connected' then indicates that it is 'blank or has an unsupported filesystem'. (In
each case power is being supplied to the TL002 through the Samsung charger.)

There are several files and folders on each of them that can be seen and accessed on a PC.

This does not happen when a USB flash drive is connected. In that case, the drive is recognised and the MyFiles folder opens.
Have you any clues why this might be happening and any suggestions on how to overcome the problem?
