I am tring to send a file from a server to this ether-serial port then onto a cnc machine and am wondering which mode I should use? I have tried driver mode and cannot communicate after setting up baud rate etc......

Driver mode is definitely the most straight forward mode when using on a Windows based machine.
Are you using any specific software to communicate with the CNC machine, or are you simply sending a text file through a terminal program?
In addition, have you verified that you're in fact able to communicate through the ESL before hooking it up to the CNC Machine?
