In Data Connect mode two ESL units are paired to create a “virtual” extender cable, passing all signals from one end of the tunnel to the other.
However in Data Connect mode there is actually no way to pass the Ring Indicator (RI) signal through this “virtual” cable.
Traditionally RI is a signal that is passed from Modem (DCE Device) to Computer (DTE Device). Given this the RI line on the Computer is an INPUT ONLY signal and can never be set to be an out.
With Data Connect mode we are essentially connecting two DTE devices via a TCP/IP socket and passing Raw Data from one end of the “virtual” cable to the other. Therefore while one end of the tunnel is cable to detect a change in RI it is impossible for the other end of the tunnel to output the change detected.
