Full Version: How are ports enumerated on my multi-port card with a cable

Issue:
When installing a card in Windows the order that the ports are enumerated isn’t in consecutive order (i.e. Port 1 is COM X, Port 2 is COM X+1, etc). What is the best way to determine what ports are which?

Cause:
When enumerating the ports on a card Windows will seem to enumerate the ports in a semi-random fashion, giving the first port a higher Com Port number than the next logical ports on the card.

Resolution:
There is no way to truly predict how Windows will enumerate a given card on every system however it might help to know that when properly installed all of our cards should identify themselves alphabetically, corresponding to the port letter that is silk-screened on the actual card.

In addition when a fan out cable is required (Octopus-550, Quattro-PCI/LP and DSerial-PCI/LP) the alphabetical lettering corresponds directly to the connector number (i.e. Port A – Connector 1, Port B – Connector 2, etc).
